The Gospel
The Gospel simply means the "good news." It is the story of Jesus,
woven through the fabric of scripture. In the Garden of Eden, a promise was
given of one who would be born of woman and who would crush the head of the
serpent (Satan). This person was foreshadowed in the law of Moses and spoken of
through the prophets of the Old Testament as one who would be born in Bethlehem;
a great shepherd of God's people; a light for people walking in darkness; "Wonderful
Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace;" a suffering
messiah who would provide atonement for sins; and one who would someday return,
coming on the clouds of heaven.
Jesus was no ordinary man. He was the son of God, born to a virgin. He
preached salvation to all who believe. He healed the sick and performed many
miracles. He showed us how to love God and taught us how to love one another. He
was the fulfillment of the law and the once-for-all sacrificial lamb of God. He
was crucified on a cross and raised from the dead, then ascended to heaven to be
seated at the right hand of God. He promised eternal life to all who believe in
him.
Jesus said, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that
whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16).
He also said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk
in darkness, but will have the light of life" (John 8:12), and "I am the way
and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you
really knew me, you would know my Father as well" (John 14:6,7).
The Bible teaches that we have all sinned (Romans 3:23) and that the just
penalty for our sin is death (Romans 6:23). This sin separates us from God
unless we believe in Jesus as the one who paid the penalty for us by dying on
the cross in our place—"That if you confess with your mouth 'Jesus is Lord,'
and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved"
(Romans 10:9). We can't be saved through our good deeds, no matter how well intentioned—"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this
not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can
boast" (Ephesians 2:8,9).
Jesus preached the good news of the kingdom of
God. This good news is the message of what God
really desires from us—a love of God and one
another and a righteousness that comes by faith.
Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!
(2 Corinthians 9:15) |
